Pittsburg Air Quality Review, Nov 2

girl-inhaler.jpgThe Pittsburg Defense Council is asking Delta and Bay allies to attend a presentation to their City Council by the Bay Area Air Quality Management District on the state of Pittsburg air quality. Your signage and comments will help BAAQMD and the City Council understand that citizens need to have their air monitoring station restored—it was removed in 2008—and reactivated in this industrial city, which is suffering high rates of asthma and other negative impacts.

The PDC and the Freedom Breathers, a group of Pittsburg high school students, have been assisted over the last two years by Global Community Monitoring in conducting independent air monitoring tests.  They presented their disturbing results to the City Council at a prior meeting.  We're hoping BAAQMD will corroborate those findings and take appropriate action.  Strong turnout at this meeting will help to ensure that.

Here's an encouraging reminder that community pressure actually works.  The WesPac proposal seems to be stalling out again.  WesPac has not officially put the project on hold, but according to the city planning manager, they have not authorized the city to do any work on the Recirculated Draft Environmental Impact Report.
